The Great Project of Ferrotramviaria S.p.A. will enable the first interconnection of the railway networks having a strategic impact on the regional mobility system. The financing for the Operational Programme F.E.S.R. Puglia 2007-2013 amounts to 180 million Euro, and the implementing body is Ferrotramviaria S.p.A..
The intervention will deal with: the doubling of the rack along the Corato – Barletta stretch for 13 km; the underground routing of the railway in the residential area of Andria for 2.9 km, of which approx. 460 metres in tunnel, with three new stops; the building of park and ride car parks next to 11 stations/train stops with approx. 2,000 spaces; the elimination of 13 level crossings and the interconnection with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in the Bari Central and Barletta stations. The municipalities directly concerned by the intervention are seven: Barletta, Andria, Corato, Ruvo, Terlizzi, Bitonto and Bari.
The Barletta interchange node between Ferrotramviaria S.p.A. and RFI will enable the access to the train connection with the airport of Bari not only to the people living in the municipalities served by Ferrovie del Nord, but also to the whole Capitanata area. There will be some important repercussions on the regional capital too thanks to the achievement of the first functional interoperability within the Bari railway junction between the Adriatic line with the regional lines.
The Ferrotramviaria S.p.A. trains coming from the airport will thus arrive directly at the fifth track of the West platform of Ferrovie dello Stato.
The interventions will be carried out according to functional lots, in order to limit any problems caused to users and to ensure the prompt use of the parts of the works carried out from time to time.
